The Asus Zenbook UX301 and Zenbook UX302 are the next generations of Ultrabooks, following the success of the Ivy Bridge-powered Asus Zenbook UX31A and UX32VD. Asus has further pushed and improved its Zenbook lineup and is undeniably even better than the previous generation.

On the outside, both the Asus Zenbook UX301 and Zenbook UX302 features a scratch-resistant lid that is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, with Native Damage Resistance, on top of the spun metal design which is unique to Asus Ultrabooks. This is supposed to protect the lid from scratches and will preserve its look from the day you bought it, until the day you won’t be needing it anymore.

The Asus Zenbook UX301 and Zenbook UX302 have a 13.3-inch 10-point multi-touch display with IPS technology ensuring rich and accurate colors within the 178 degrees viewing angle. You can choose in either 1920×1080 display resolution or a 2560×1440 WQHD display resolution for the Zenbook UX301. Meanwhile, the Zenbook UX302 is fixed at 1920×1080 full HD resolution. Even if you get the Full HD 1920×1080 display, it is still far better to form a 1366×768 which is commonly found in mainstream and entry-level laptops and notebook nowadays.

Under the hood of the Asus Zenbook UX301 is a 4th generation Intel Core processor, either Intel Core i5-4200U, Core i7-4500U, or Core i7-4558U. If you check my list of Intel Haswell processors, these are all dual-core processors with four threads. The Core i5-4200U offers a clock speed of 1.60GHz, while the Core i7-4500U has a clock speed of 1.80GHz. Both of them come with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400 processor. Meanwhile, the Core i7-4558U is the fastest among the three, with a clock speed of 2.80GHz, and it features Intel Iris Graphics 5100 as its integrated graphics processor (obviously the better choice).

Meanwhile, the Asus Zenbook UX302 comes only with Core i5-4200U or Core i7-4500U. But instead of Intel HD Graphics 4400 alone, you will have the option for a discrete graphics processor, namely the NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M with 2GB of VRAM. In terms of graphics processing (gaming), the UX302 might be the better option.

The Asus Zenbook UX301 is expected to come with a 4GB or 8GB of RAM. It is still unsure whether the RAM is soldered onto the motherboard or there will be a slot for the memory. However the Zenbook UX302 will come only in 4GB of RAM, but there is a possibility that it can be upgraded up to 8GB via a SO-DIMM slot as well.

Expect that the Zenbook UX301 will have SSD for its storage, with a configuration of up to 512GB in RAID 0. Meanwhile, the Asus Zenbook UX302 will have a 750GB Hard Drive paired with a 16GB SSD cache. It’s not as fast as the pure SSD setup, but thanks to the SSD Cache, it will speed up the loading time. I’m guessing that the 750GB hard drive will only be a 5400RPM drive, and I recommend that you change this. See here why.

Both the Asus Zenbook UX301 and Zenbook UX302 will have WiFi 802.11ac with Bluetooth 4.0 for its wireless connectivity. As for its wired connectivity options, the UX301 and UX302 will have two or three USB 3.0 ports, a mini-DisplayPort, a micro HDMI 1.4 port, a 3.5mm audio/mic jack, and an SD card reader slot.

The Asus Zenbook UX301 has a dimension of 325mm x 226mm x 15.5mm and weighs 1.38kg. While the Zenbook UX302 is slightly thicker with 17.2mm at its thickest point and weighs 1.5kg. This is probably because it’s using a hard drive instead of pure SSD.

In terms of battery life, Asus didn’t disclose as to how long will these Haswell Ultrabooks last. But since the Zenbooks UX301 and UX302 are powered by the latest 4th gen Intel Haswell processor, which is low power consumption and very efficient processor, I’m guessing that the 50Wh battery will last for 4 hours or more depending on the activity of the user.
