Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 Features

Let’s start with the physical aspect or outer look of the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 first. The Zenbook Pro UX501 is basically a 15.6-inch Ultrabook featuring an elegant aluminum body. The top lid features Asus’ spun-metal finish while underneath is plain aluminum brushed finished. It’s only 0.8-inch thin and weighs around 4.5 lbs including the 6 cell battery.
Opening the Zenbook Pro UX501 will reveal the stunning Ultra HD 4K (3840×2160 resolution) touchscreen display featuring an IPS panel (178 degrees wide viewing angle) and 282 ppi pixel density, giving you than vibrant, vivid and crisp images. The display features an ultra-wide color gamut of 100% sRGB, 72% NTSC and 74% Adobe RGB. This basically means that it can display more accurate and vivid colors compared to a typical LCD display.
It also features a standard keyboard layout with a numerical keypad and provides sufficient keystroke travel. The keyboard is paired with a 16:9 glass-coated multi-touch touchpad. The Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 has a built-in 2 speaker powered by Bang & Olufsen ICEpower paired with an array microphone. But don’t expect too much from its built-in speakers. A separate Bluetooth or dedicated speaker is far better than built-in ones.
In terms of connectivity options, the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 has three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI 1.4 port, a Thunderbolt 2 port, a headphone out, and audio-in combo, AC adapter plug, and a micro SD card slot. For wireless connectivity options, it features dual-band WiFi 802.11ac, providing speeds of up to 867Mb/s, and Bluetooth 4.0. Almost forgot, it also has a 1.2-megapixel front-facing webcam.
Now let’s take a look at what’s under the hood of the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501. It is powered by a 4th generation Intel Core i7-4720HQ Quad-Core Haswell processor clocked at 2.6GHz paired with 16GB of DDR3L SDRAM. Graphics is powered by an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM, and storage is handled by a 512GB PCIE SSD which is really really fast. It is about 2 to 3 times faster than your SATA-based SSD, and really really way faster than your typical 5400RPM or 7200RPM hard disk drive. The PCIE SSD is capable of reaching up to 1400MB/s of reading/write speed.

It runs on Windows 8.1 (64-bit), but I’m not 100% sure if you can upgrade the OS to Windows 10 for free. Most users who are using Windows 8 and 8.1 now gets a full version of Windows 10 free upgrade when it is released. It also comes with a 6-cell Lithium Polymer battery which is rated to last up to 6 hours of usage. But it really depends on your load and use. You will definitely get more hours if you are just browsing the internet, or typing some word document. But expect that you will only get an hour (or less) if you are gaming.
Lastly, I would like to emphasize that its discrete graphics card (the GTX 960M) is not designed and doesn’t have enough power to drive games at 4K resolution. Even the desktop-class GTX 970 isn’t enough for 4K gaming. You will need at least a GTX 980 Ti or Titan X or the latest AMD Radeon R9 Fury to play games smoothly (high to ultra game settings) at 4K UHD resolution. If you plan on gaming with the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501, you will have to reduce your screen resolution to 1080p to play games at the decent frame rates.
Anyway, I’ve added some video reviews below of the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 and you should be able to see what I mean.
